![]() ![]() In The Laundry Guy, the client’s often are left grinning or weeping with joy after their pieces have been restored. Think of the literature and artwork that has skyrocketed in monetary value after the death of the author or the artist. We mourn and carry our grief, but we also place greater value on items after the death of their owners. Whatever a person’s beliefs, everyone feels the impact of death. And just as the life of a person enriches the value of the items they owned while living, the death of the person changes it too. More often than not, the things that clients bring to Patric are heirlooms-a denim disco suit, a homemade couch, a wedding dress with green accents created by weaving a ribbon in and out of the neckline. It’s not because of the intrinsic value of the thing but the intrinsic value of the person who possessed or touched the item. It’s why the Catholic Church has second- and third-class relics. I think the inherent dignity of the human person is so great that each person has the ability to change the value of the things they touch. And Patric said, “This jacket is like your cocoon and your butterfly.” She said that the jacket was attached to joy and good times, that the jacket made the cut. As the client tells the story of the jacket, she shares that right after going through a divorce, she grabbed a duffel bag and filled it with the things she would take with her. One episode of the series focuses on the restoration of a leisure jacket that was originally made in the '70s or '80s. It is tied to memories and attached to places in the heart that we still explore when we trip upon them. But there is always that thing-that shirt, that stuffed animal, that picture-that we don’t want to let go of because it is much more than just the object you see before you. There’s a worthwhile argument in the world to become minimalist-to stop hoarding and ‘have less,’ and as I look around at all the things crowding the room I’m sitting in, I understand it. One of the client’s said, while wiping away tears, “I know this is so silly. In almost every episode, a client will bring out some beloved piece of fabric, whether it be a sofa cushion or a denim suit, and ask for Patric to work his magic in restoring its former glory. She taught him that when you do laundry, “you do it because you love someone and you want to take care of them.” He was in the middle of restoring a knitted blanket and said that he hoped to make the owner of the blanket “feel like her grandmother loves her and is taking care of her when she looks at the blanket.” In the second episode of The Laundry Guy, Patric shares that his love for laundry came from his grandmother. I loved every episode, and it made me want to pick up Patric’s book Laundry Love: Finding Joy in a Common Chore. Laundry expert Patric Richardson listens to clients’ meaningful stories behind irreplaceable pieces, from wedding dresses and baby blankets to stuffed animals and vintage coats, and then carefully restores the items to mint condition. I bring this up to tell you about a new television show called The Laundry Guy, starring Patric Richardson, a self-proclaimed “laundry evangelist.” The show’s description reads, My mom passed away in 2017 and memories of her live within the threads of that tiny dress and sweater and on the strands of fur in that vintage coat. She had told me, “I never had anything like this growing up. But more than that, I remember how proud my mom was to help me put it on in the mornings. I remember my friends reaching out to touch the fur and marveling over the softness of it. When I wore that fur coat through the hallways of my small-town elementary school, I felt downright fancy. I remember wearing that to elementary school, even though I live in one of the warmest regions in the world.īut these pieces of clothing are much more than textiles and garments. I was too small to remember that, and I don’t remember ever wearing the tiny sweater either. There are photos of baby-me wearing the pink dress, nearly swallowed up by its size on my tiny, malnourished body. Fur literally flies into the air if you try to pick it up. The majority of the space in the box is taken up by a fur coat made of 100% rabbit fur. ![]() ![]() It’s white with pink trim and my first name is emblazoned on the left side, woven into the pattern with pink block lettering my maiden name is on the right. There’s a Ziploc bag holding a tiny pink dress with crisp pleats and dainty green flowers and another bag holding a knit sweater small enough to fit on a baby doll. It sits on the shelf in the hall closet, and it’s filled with memories of my childhood. Rachel Bulman ponders how clothing is much more than textiles and garments: it can be a vessel of hope.Īfter my mother passed away, I found an old Tupperware box among her belongings.

But here's another question: if I can play any region on Mac with VLC, will that also enable me to rip from any region using DVD Ripper For Mac? That is, will the Ripper be able to access via VLC, if VLC is the only way to play across regions.Įlsewhere, all I've found on this are suggestions to do with ripping a whole DVD to make it region free, but I really don't want to have to do that. Xcode automatically separates user-visible text and images are separate from executable code. DVD Ripper for Mac looks like a suitable substitute for that. With Apple’s powerful tools and technologies, including Xcode, Foundation APIs, Auto Layout, and Unicode support, it’s easy to prepare your apps to support multiple languages and regions, even before you know which languages you’d like to add. To complicate matters, I also want to be able to rip clips from DVDs of any region on a Mac, if I get one (as I can currently do easily on PC). I need to be sure something like VLC will really do the job on a Mac before I invest in one! There seems to be no shortage of region-free DVD programmes available for PC, but not for Mac, frustratingly. I just wanted to know what is the last setting. Is there any reason why it doesn't there but will on an iMac? It may just be my laptop - a Sony Vaio, on which my usual region-free programme won't work either (I usually use AnyDVD). This is not a new mac (2010) I have gone passed the 5 times limit on region change (thanks to my kids). ![]() ![]() I've just tried the PC/Windows version of VLC on a region-protected laptop and it did not overcome the region control at all. Both these tailored tasks and the general quests also contribute to an overall player level that gives minor base stat boosts as it rises, and the two types of missions can also reward Stars - a special currency used to gain entrance to key story dungeons. Each rank unlocks new abilities and bonus stats purely for that specific form, as well as opening up new paths on the form tree when certain thresholds are passed so you can expand your arsenal with new guises and abilities. There's no traditional experience system as such, with each form you unlock instead being assigned a series of challenges to complete in order to rank up that one particular character type. Levelling up in Nobody Saves the World is ingenious and original. As you'd expect from the team behind Guacamelee!, the action is fast-paced, slick, and manages to do a lot with a little - each persona only has up to four active abilities assigned to the face buttons to worry about when it all kicks off, although the character progression groundwork you put in between encounters does do a lot of heavy lifting here. Transformation options are initially extremely limited and their abilities kept simple, but it isn't long before you're hot-swapping between guises on the fly, and even mixing and matching abilities between them to create potent combos that just keep getting wilder and wilder as the adventure goes on. Our hero - a creepy amnesiac albino baby thing who wakes up in a random shed (we've all been there) - obtains a powerful magic wand in the game's opening few minutes that confers the ability to shapeshift into multiple forms. ![]() So in that regard, and for multiple reasons - some of which I'll explain shortly, and others I'll leave for you to discover for yourselves - yes, this playable egg, like Nobody Saves the World itself, is kinda brilliant.Īt its core, Nobody Saves the World is a fairly straightforward action-RPG, with one particularly novel hook that is set up right at the beginning of the game. Is the egg good, you ask? In terms of moment-to-moment gameplay, no, not really, but as you'll see across this game, the team manages to make sure every single element has at least some degree of value to it, no matter how oblique or indirect it may initially appear. And thus the age-old question is answered - Guacamelee!'s playable chicken clearly predates Nobody Saves the World's playable egg, so there can be no arguments over which came first in Drinkbox canon. Guacamelee! developer Drinkbox is clearly on the same page, and Nobody Saves the World rights that wrong, with the unassuming ovoid form being just one of many personas our eyeless hero can assume in order to take the fight to the forces of evil that now sweep this colourful land. Nobody Saves the World DrinkBox Studios Xbox Game Pass Review Xbox Series X|S Game review Action-RPG Luke Albigés I'm sure you'll all agree that the modern gaming landscape is sorely lacking in opportunities to play as an egg. He elaborated by stating that both chambers of the federal Congress warned against omitting the serial comma "to prevent any misreading that the last item is part of the preceding one", and said that only seven of the American states (including Maine) "either did not require or expressly prohibited the use of the serial comma". Maine legislature drafting guidelines actually recommend against using the serial comma, advising that any confusing sentence be entirely rewritten.īut the appellate judge was obviously a fan, saying: "We would be remiss not to note the clarifying virtues of serial commas that other jurisdictions recognise". (It's worth noting that, even with an additional comma that would prevent Nelson Mandela from being a dildo collector, the sentence is so poorly phrased he could conceivably still be an 800-year-old demigod.) There are two lists in this example that omit the serial comma, although only the second really demands it to eliminate ambiguity. The highlights of his global tour include encounters with Nelson Mandela, an 800-year-old demigod and a dildo collector. "By train, plane and sedan chair, Peter Ustinov retraces a journey made by Mark Twain a century ago. It comes before the final "and" or "or" in a series (a list of three or more items).įor example, "Stone fruits include apricots, plums, and nectarines".Īlthough some think it is clunky, the Maine case strikes a blow for the importance of clarity.Ĭonsider this particularly spectacular example, supposedly from a TV listing in The Times: This contentious comma is the serial comma, often called the "Oxford comma" and in some circles the "Harvard comma". There are other grammatical issues with this clause (neatly unpacked in more detail by Mary Norris in The New Yorker), but David Webbert, a lawyer for the drivers, told The New York Times: "That comma would have sunk our ship". Without the comma, the drivers argued, the law referred only to the act of packing, for the purpose of either shipping or distributing. The missing comma, in this case, would have separated "packing for shipment" and "distribution" into distinct activities, both exempt from overtime. The canning, processing, preserving, freezing, drying, marketing, storing, packing for shipment or distribution of: The case hinged on the missing comma after "packing for shipment" in the following clause of Maine state law, which lists exemptions from overtime: Three dairy-truck drivers sued Oakhurst Dairy in 2014 for four years of unpaid overtime wages. Last week, Judge David J Barron upheld an appeal in a class-action lawsuit, opening his opinion with: "For want of a comma, we have this case." ![]() Portland-based company Oakhurst Dairy will potentially owe $US10 million ($13 million) to 75 milk-truck drivers in the US state of Maine because of a missing comma in a legal clause. ![]() This quickly lead to a map that was far more constrained than it had been at the start and helped funnel us all towards the flames. In one rather frantic matchup, we found that the square under each bomb placed within a certain section of the map, was destroyed. One new danger to watch out for on some multiplayer maps though, are falling or destructible floor tiles. The campaign may also have more story than Bomberman fans are used to: The game will reportedly feature voice acting, which is an interesting addition for a series which has a soundtrack traditionally dominated by repeat explosions. It’s not clear if those stages will also be available in multiplayer. While we have yet to play the campaign itself, we are told there are new and interesting boss fights, some of which we were able to see in early screenshot releases. We’ve also been told the campaign will include new ‘3D’ stages, which add some verticality to the experience. ![]() We may see more visual variation in the game’s single-player story mode: According to Konami, the campaign will feature as many as 50 stages, with goals that vary beyond blowing up all of your enemies. They are cartoony, colorful and crisp, without the aliasing we noted in other Switch games like Fast RMX, but they do little to evolve the traditional Bomberman aesthetic. That photo-realism stands in stark contrast to the visuals in the rest of the game. There may be a functional purpose to the design, though it wasn’t made clear in our short multiplayer demonstration. It seems like an odd choice: while the design is sharp, there’s nothing about Bomberman that seems like it would be enhanced by true to life aesthetics. ![]() Super Bomberman R features maps with “photo-realistic” backdrops that look like they were ripped right out of the real world. The world outside the borders of the stages you battle on is where the game’s new visual style is most apparent. If you do want to play on the Switch’s small screen, doing so by yourself up close, is going to be a lot easier than trying to play at a relative distance with a friend. Playing this game on a TV feels like the right way to go. The situation isn’t perfect, though: Staring at the Switch screen from a distance wasn’t always easy, especially when the camera zoomed out to show us the exterior of the level. Up to eight players can compete in a single match: The game only supports two-player local multiplayer using a single Switch console, but you can link more consoles for larger LAN battles. That simplicity is perfect, because it opens the door for the Switch’s unique brand of local multiplayer. All are reasonably self explanatory for new players and feature the traditional icons for the more experienced. That simplicity is perfect, because it opens the door for the Switch’s unique brand of local multiplayer.Ĭlassic power-ups like the speed boosting skate, boxing gloves and the bomb kick all make returns, alongside the additional bombs and fire radius boosts. A secondary face button can be used for activating certain abilities – like kicking bombs over obstacles – but the majority of the in-game controls are based around movement and placing explosives. True to form, the controls in Super Bomberman R are very simple, which makes them a great fit for the Switch’s Joy-Con controller. Using a single Joy-Con, you use the analogue stick to move, and one of the face buttons for dropping bombs. The gameplay was fast and frantic as ever, especially towards the end of a round, when many of the intervening blocks had been blown away and it was a race to see who could trick the other person into stepping into a dangerous part of the map, while avoiding danger yourself. Although things have changed a little over the years, Super Bomberman R remains committed to that tried and true tradition. Those explosions kill your enemies and crucially, you, if you can’t get out of the way. As in past games, you control a bomber-person, who runs around a grid based map, dropping bombs that explode in vertical and horizontal lines. The bombing continuesīomberman has been around in some form since the mid-1980s. Super Bomberman R will need to draw in a new generation of gamers to its explosive ways, while helping the Switch itself have a healthy launch. More importantly, it’s a big deal for Bomberman itself, as the game is part the Switch’s day-one launch lineup, alongside the new Zelda, 1-2 Switch, Just Dance 2017 and Skylanders Imaginators. This is big news for fans of the franchise, as we haven’t seen the little pyromaniacs in a main series, non-portable title since 2010. Super Bomberman R brings back the series’ classic gameplay, balancing a few new twists with the multiplayer formula that the series has always championed. There’s a new generation of Nintendo hardware coming in March, and with the Nintendo Switch, Konami is looking to rejuvenate the Bomberman franchise for a new wave of players. ![]() It’s easy to feel sorry for Felix after we watch his peers whip him for what they see as a dereliction of duty and then have him fall prey to Sam’s manipulations masked as friendship.
